The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
