Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
